Solar Hot water and Heating Systems

The UK gathers more than enough solar energy to make a solar hot water system work. The UK receives about 65% of the solar levels experienced in Spain and 55% of the solar levels experience at the equator. Solar hot systems even work in cloudy and low light conditions.

Solar hot water systems are one of the most cost effective renewable energy producers available and can reduce VAT from 17.5% to 5% for domestic applications. It will pay for itself between 8 - 15 years over time depending on a number of economic factors including energy prices, your usage, climate changes and if it is additional to your electric or gas boiler.

Solar Systems can save between 400 and 750kg of CO2 emissions per year.

Installing solar energy into your property not only adds value to your house but is becoming a very desirable option for potential buyers.

Solar hot water systems work by absorbing the suns energy to store as hot water. The suns energy is absorbed in the solar collector usually mounted on the roof or A-frame. A heat transfer fluid, a glycol/water mixture, passes through the collector absorbing the heat and transferring it to the hot water cylinder via heat exchangers.

The glycol/water mixture is pumped around a closed circuit, called the solar circuit, heating up in the solar collector and cooling down inside the hot water cylinder. As the glycol-mixture cools down in the cylinder the stored water heats up. The temperature of the glycol mixture in the collector and hot water cylinder is monitored by a control unit that determines when the pump should be operating.

Solar hot water system needs a second coil inside the hot water cylinder for the solar circuit. This coil is mounted at the bottom of the cylinder where the water is the coldest. The heat transfer process is more efficient when the difference in temperature between the glycol mixture and stored water is higher. Hot water rises to the top of the cylinder, where it is piped off for use. The boiler coil is positioned higher up in the cylinder and is only used when the water needs additional heating.

Solar Heating Systems - Torrent RE Solar Thermal Store
    ThermalStore

Built on the expertise gained with our popular range of Torrent thermal stores, with a range of models suitable for gas, electricity or oil.

Torrent ‘RE’ Solar incorporates a highly effective heat exchanger to maximise the energy collected by the solar panels. These can be either flat panel or evacuated tube.

The solar dedicated section of the Torrent ‘RE’ Solar then extracts this energy to provide hot water for domestic use but also, importantly, for heating.

Solar heated water flows through the boiler thus reducing the amount of fuel used for HEATING and hot water. This is particularly useful in Autumn and Spring when sufficient energy is still being produced through the collectors to provide background heating.

Solar Panels can be used to heat even the biggest swimming pools, providing there's space for roughly 25% of the pools surface area, for the solar panels.
